Microsoft has lived under a countless amount of praise by gaming journalists since the release of the Xbox 360. When the Playstation 3 released, 360 was claimed to be the superior console with the PS3 having “no good games”. The times have changed and Microsoft is under stiff competition.
With Playstation 3 having arguably the best exclusive lineup a console has ever seen within a one year span. Games including Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, Demon Souls, infamous, and more have shown the variety and quality of content in the still young PS3 life cycle. Consumers who haven’t made the next generation jump are going to consider PS3 especially when Grand Turismo 5 and God of War 3 make their next gen appearances.
Tremendous strides in enhancing the Playstation Network have also given the PS3 great momentum going into next year. Though Sony hasn’t yet delivered on all the promises of Playstation Home, it continues to improve.

For Microsoft, they have improved features of Xbox Live and offer a variety of services including Last FM, and Integration of Facebook, Twitter and Netflix. The Playstation 3 also features Netflix, Twitter & Facebook (Twitter & Facebook via Web browser) at a less optimal experience.
Beyond Xbox Live there are very few things I can congratulate Microsoft on. Their exclusive lineup perished during the first 3 quarters of 2009; meanwhile PS3 got back to back AAA games. Forza 3 released in October and is a great game in its own respect but the damage already had been done. Halo 3 ODST tried to respond to Sony’s lineup, packing an estimated new 5 hour campaign, a new mode and a few new Halo 3 multipayer maps.
Microsoft still has tough competition to deal with next year. They have great games releasing on Xbox 360 but we don’t know if it will be enough. There is Splinter Cell Conviction, Mass Effect 2, Alan Wake and Halo Reach, though rumors of lost exclusivity for Splinter Cell and Mass Effect have been floating around the net for some time now.
In order for Xbox 360 to continue their success next year, Microsoft must do the following:
1. Secure their exclusives
2. Get more ambitious (Give gamers a great game that isn’t a shooter)
3. Ensure Project Natal is a success by catering towards casual and hardcore gamers
4. Continue to improve Xbox Live
5. Lower the price of the arcade SKU for 360 and lower accessory prices
